Personality Disorder     

       Personality disorders affect how a person thinks and behaves, making it hard for them to live a normal life. They are very deep-rooted, so hard to treat, but people can be helped to manage their difficulties.
       Personality disorder is a controversial diagnosis. There are no accurate figures, but an estimated 10% of the general population have some kind of personality disorder
       Our personality is the way we think and feel and behave. Some people think and feel and behave in ways that make it very difficult for them to get on with other people and cope with ordinary life. They may have difficulty controlling their feelings and behaviour and may get very angry and distressed and hurt themselves or other people. These people are often diagnosed with a personality disorder.

       People diagnosed with personality disorder may also be very inflexible – they may have a narrow range of attitudes, behaviours and coping mechanisms which they can’t change easily, if at all. They may not understand why they need to change, as they do not feel they have a problem.

People with personality disorders may find it difficult to:
  •     make or keep relationships
  •     get on with people at work
  •     get on with friends and family
  •     keep out of trouble
  •     control their feelings or behaviour.

     There are several different types of personality disorders, which are categorised under three main ‘clusters’:
Cluster A: Suspicious
  •     paranoid personality disorder
  •     schizoid personality disorder
  •     schizotypal personality disorder
Cluster B: Emotional and impulsive
  •     anti-social personality disorder
  •     borderline personality disorder
  •     histrionic personality disorder
  •     narcissistic personality disorder
Cluster C: Anxious
  •     avoidant personality disorder
  •     dependent personality disorder
  •     obsessive compulsive personality disorder

        There is a widespread belief that all people with a personality disorder are very dangerous and can harm other people. This is not true. Some people with anti-social or psychopathic personality disorder may be dangerous. But people diagnosed with borderline or paranoid personality disorder are more likely to harm or even kill themselves.
      People with personality disorder are likely to have experienced great trauma in their childhood, and often have multiple and complex needs because of their difficulties fitting in with ordinary life and expectations.
      People with personality disorder may also have other mental health problems, such as depression, anxiety, panic disorders, eating disorders, self-harm, substance misuse, and bi-polar disorder.
    It can be very difficult to diagnose personality disorders if other mental health problems are masking the personality disorder. Sometimes people with similar symptoms – people with PTSD or Asperger’s syndrome – are misdiagnosed as having a personality disorder.

Causes of personality disorders
      The causes of personality disorders are not fully known. Possible causes include trauma in early childhood such as abuse, violence, inadequate parenting and neglect. Neurological and genetic factors may also play a part.

Treatments and self management strategies
       Very little research has been undertaken into treatments for personality disorder. What we do know is that most forms of personality disorder can be managed, but no single treatment or management strategy will be effective in all cases.
     Personality disorders may be difficult to treat because they involve lifelong, pervasive attitudes and behaviours and because people with personality disorders often have other mental health problems. When a treatment is seen to fail it is often the patient who is blamed for not fitting the programme rather than the service admitting that it has not met the individual’s needs. 
      In the UK treatment for personality disorders varies considerably, depending to a large extent on whether people are in a general NHS setting, an inpatient psychiatric unit, special hospital or in the prison system. The availability of appropriate resources including qualified staff, therapeutic environments and management support for innovative treatments is also a major issue.
Medication (pharmacological treatments)
       Personality disorder is not strictly a mental health problem. Medication is often used, but mainly to control other, associated symptoms. Short-term treatments may include anxiolytic or neuroleptic drugs, which are given for short periods or at times of severe stress
         Long-term treatments may involve the use of neuroleptics, which can be helpful in cases of paranoid and schizotypal personality disorders. However it is possible that the medication is mainly controlling risk and stress, rather than having any long term impact on the personality disorder itself.
Cognitive therapies and self-management approaches are also proving successful in helping people live with personality disorder.

Psychodynamic treatment
        This treatment emphasises personality structure and development. It aims to help people understand their feelings and to find better coping mechanisms. This approach has had limited success and is likely to be less successful for those with addiction and/or antisocial personality disorder.
Cognitive and behavioural therapy 
       Cognitive and behavioural therapies such as cognitive therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy, interpersonal psychotherapy and cognitive analytic therapy can also be helpful. Most cognitive behavioural approaches address specific aspects of thoughts, feelings, behaviour or attitude, and do not claim to treat the entire personality disorder of the person. Research suggests that there are some short term benefits to these approaches but more research is required into the long term benefits.

       The therapeutic community (TC) approach involves living in a therapeutic community for several months. Engagement in therapy is voluntary and responsibility for the day to day running of the TC is shared between patients and staff. Members of the TC are encouraged to talk about their feelings, and particularly their feelings about each others’ behaviour. This encourages them to think about the affect of their own behaviour on other people. The results of TC are still be researched.

       Whatever we think and do can be either positive thinking or Negative. All that happens in our lives is an outcome of the energies that we are surrounded by.
These are:
    (a) Positive Energy or  positive thinking
    (b) Negative Energy
       All that pleases us and goes in our favor, and gives us happiness, is an outcome of the Positive Energy or positive thinking. While all that goes against us, brings unhappiness, uneasiness, disturbance, ill-health etc. is the consequence of Negative Energy. Both these energies and their consequences are correlated and an integral part of our lives.

      Have you ever realized, who or what is it that decides what gives us happiness, admiration, success etc. Is it your luck, your past deeds, your karma or GOD? Well, none of these. It is we who decide our fate.....and all that it depends on, is what we think and how we react to the circumstances.
       We are living in a highly competitive world where a minor mistake can result into a major loss. Each one of us crave for happiness, love, admiration, success and acceptance. Instead, we often fall a prey to outbursts such as anger, fear, dislikes, unhappiness and uneasiness, that are mere manifestations of our negative thoughts. But the fact about negativity is that, the more you express it, the more you attract it and become its victim. Here's where the power of positive thinking plays an important role.
    
  positive thinking can prove to be a powerful weapon to achieve our goals. Whatever we do begins with a thought. Positive thought is an important way to instigate positive attitude towards a task, which in turn changes the result of what we do. What we think, is what we expect or what we fear of. So if we keep a positive thought, we can achieve the best.
       Most of the time we are surrounded by negativity. 90% of what we think is negative. Only 5% of our thoughts are in the positive direction. It therefore becomes important to identify these disturbing negative thoughts and bury them before they start taking root.
       Lets consider a common example. Take a glass of water that is less than full. An Optimist

would see the glass as half filled, while a  Pessimist would see it as an half way empty glass. This is a general fact that describes the difference between a positive and a negative thought.
        Always learn to have a positive attitude or positive thinking towards Life, and feel Good about yourself. Never pity yourself for anything. Remember you are worthy of everything you desire and work for. Be happy for what you are and be content with what you have. Focusing on what you have, generates happiness while pondering over what you lack brings dissatisfaction. Most of our fears and insecurities arise from past regrets or future worries. We must learn to live in the present. Develop a healthy eating and sleeping schedule. Free your life and your homes of the unnecessary clutter for it is one of the biggest elements to attract negative energy.

Personality development

 What is Personality development?

Personality development is, in short, your personal improvement. There are numerous ways to improve yourself. We all have unique personality. If you want to improve it, here are my suggestions:
  •     decide what you would like to improve
  •     decide how or in which way will you achieve that
  •     think about consequences
 Making decision about your Personality development can be hard thing to do because we tend to improve our negative sides. It’s hard to admit to ourselves that those aspects of our personality exist.

    Once you decided to improve yourself, you have to find out how. Not every way is the best possible. Think about if for a while until you find perfect solution that fits your personality and doesn’t ruin other aspects of your life.

    Try to predict consequences. If you improved one aspect of your personality, that might hurt some other part of your personality. Think about it and prevent it!

           Believing in one self is the first step to success. It is very important to know yourself in and out. Until and unless you are aware of what you are capable of doing, you will never be able to have faith in your capabilities. Your faith in your capabilities can work wonders for you.
           Once you are aware of your capabilities and your limits, you would know what works the best for you. Knowing what is right and wrong can lead you to the right direction. If you know what has to be done and you are aware of your own limits, things would be far more easy for you to analyze. When you start believing in yourself, automatically things would seem to be far more simple and feasible. When you know that you are capable of achieving whatever you want to, nothing would be impossible for you in this world. 
           All of us find new things beyond our acceptance and difficult to deal with. That is absolutely normal. But it is equally important to know that until and unless you have faith in yourself, it would obviously be hard for you to accept anything new. Also remember, Innovators are the people who are remembered for their work, and not the ones who follow. 
           Faith and Fear are like the two sides of a coin. Both exist within us, but are opposite each other. Whatever you choose to see, would overpower the other and be on the surface and above the other. People often fear of new approaches. This fear can be due to anything, like that of trying something new or due to something that you tried in the past and failed to succeed in. It can also be the outcome of anything due to which you must have suffered a great loss or received some sort of suffering. But if try and fight your fear, you would emerge as a completely new, collected and confident individual. 
           When you try something new, you are ought to make mistakes. These mistakes teach you new lessons in life. You earn the experience that you can never develop with any success. A person who is always successful would probably never be able to realize or know his weakness. On the other hand a person who faces failures in life, is more likely to come face-to-face with his/her weaker side and in turn work on them and rectify them at the very initial stage, because once you are successful you would find it far more difficult to cope with the loss or failure. It is this time when your inner strength and self belief comes into play. 
           Your faith in yourself can work miracles for you. Once you tell yourself that nothing is impossible for you and believe in the fact, it would miraculously appear to you, that actually nothing is impossible or far from your reach. This faith is your greatest strength that can help you achieve anything and everything in life. 
           Your faith in yourself is the biggest source of strength and confidence. The real power of "Faith" is still untold. It is something that you will realize and see for yourself once you believe in it. You can change your destiny, change the path of misfortunes and do just about anything.
